ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the association between self-reported BMI and sociodemographic and behavioral variables. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 357 adults of both sexes (male/female), aged 20 to 35 years. The dependent variable was self-reported BMI. The techniques of descriptive statistics were applied. The dependent variable was analyzed in continual form, and linear and simple regression and multivariate analysis were used. Results: The rate of overweight was 34.3% higher in males (41.6%). After adjustment, it was observed that women showed a decrease of -1.7 kg/m² in BMI, and those who were living with a partner and consumed soft drinks 3 or more days a week presented increases in self-reported BMI of 1.6 kg/m2 and 1.1 kg/m², respectively. Conclusion: High values of self-reported BMI were observed in the adult population of Cataguases in the state of Minas Gerais, and these values were inversely associated with female sex and positively and independently with civil status and the consumption of soft drinks. This demonstrates the need to conduct educational programs to modify the lifestyle
